HIGH CONDITION SMITH & WESSON .38 SINGLE ACTION 2ND. MODEL REVOLVER WITH MONTANA HISTORY, SHIPPED 1886
Description: HIGH CONDITION .38 SINGLE ACTION 2ND. MODEL REVOLVER WITH MONTANA HISTORY, ORIGINALLY SHIPPED T0 S&W DEALER M. W. ROBINSON, NEW YORK CITY ON AUGUST 20, 1886. This model was made from 1877-1891. This example is a really interesting S&W for a couple of reasons. First, it recently turned up here in Montana. It came with a wood and glass topped display case (one corner a little splintered) with printed info pasted inside the case. One of the cards inside tells about the revolver itself while the other gives the history: “T. Jones, Riverboat Gambler. He later moved to Butte, MT where his younger brother was an engineer for the B. A. and P. Railroad. Butte was a wide open gambling Mecca at this time. When T. Jones died his gun was passed to his brother, A. Jones who handed it down to his son, J. Jones (born 1924-died 1993). He passed the gun to his daughter who had no need so offered it to the highest for their enjoyment.” Apparently a S&W letter was sent for as the top heading of the letter was cut off and glued into the case for effect. The letter info and shipping details were included in the other printed info card in the case. This 3 1/4" barrel revolver with number 99XXX has matching numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder and barrel latch. There is a five pointed star by the serial number indicating that this gun was sent back to S&W for rework or refinish. Inside the grip on the frame is “1014” indicating the work was done in October 1914. This does not necessarily mean the revolver was refinished, it could have been sent back for a repair. The nickel finish is bright and minty overall and the markings are all sharp and clear- leading me to think it was NOT refinished. The hammer shows excellent case colors and the blued latch and star extractor show all the blue. All edges are sharp and aside from only part of the serial number stamping on the back of the cylinder which shows weakness (could be a light stamping), it just doesn’t look like a re-nickel. Grips are fine with the left grip panel showing a little more wear which is typical of a carried gun. Interesting and very attractive, wood case included.
