Smith & Wesson Lever Pistol - Large Frame Type II
Description: Smith & Wesson patented the toggle-link mechanism for repeating firearms in 1854. Prior to that, Daniel Wesson made the first ~200 Large Frame pistols as his contribution to the parnership with Horace Smith. This is one of those early, Wesson made pistols: SN 91, likely made in 1851-1853. Their toggle-link system for repeating firearms went on to the Henry, the Winchester rifles of 1873 & 1876, with the last '73 being manufactured until 1923! Though the barrel address says "CAST - STEEL" these early guns were iron. Notice the numerous forging defects in the casting, as the metalurgy was still developing during this time period. The highest know serial number of these guns is 222, so you can see the rarity. The condition is Fine. The barrel & magazine tube retain a good deal of the origibal brown finish. The bore is good and the grips have the expected minor nicks. the mechanics, though a little stiff, are good. A great piece of Volcanic/Henry/Winchester history. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Lever Pistol Co. Model: Large Frame - Type II Serial Number: 91 Caliber Info: .41 Condition: Fine Finish: Browned Engraving: factory |
