LETTERED World War II U.S. SMITH & WESSON .38 VICTORY DA Revolver C&R WW2
Shipped to the U.S. MARITIME COMMISSION in 1943
Description: LETTERED World War II U.S. SMITH & WESSON .38 VICTORY DA Revolver C&R WW2 Shipped to the U.S. MARITIME COMMISSION in 1943 Here we present a C&R Lettered Smith & Wesson “Victory” Model .38 Special Revolver, made in March of 1943 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and shipped from the Smith & Wesson factory to the U.S. Maritime Commission in Reading, Pennsylvania. The United States Maritime Commission was an independent executive agency of the U.S. federal government that was created by the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, which was passed by Congress on June 29, 1936, and was abolished on May 24, 1950. From 1939 through the end of World War II, the Maritime Commission funded and administered the largest and most successful merchant shipbuilding effort in world history. By the end of the war, U.S. shipyards working under Maritime Commission contracts had built a total of 5,777 oceangoing merchant and naval ships and many smaller vessels. The Victory model was so named for the “V” prefix which was placed before the serial number and represented "Victory" against the Axis powers in World War II. Serial numbers for the .38 Special Victory model began at about V1 in early 1942 and ran until VS811119 with a date of late August of 1945 (end of production). The included Smith & Wesson Historian letter from Roy G. Jinks indicates this revolver was shipped from the factory to the U.S. Maritime Commission in Reading, Pennsylvania on March 21, 1943 with a 4” barrel, military black magic finish, butt swivel, and smooth walnut non-monogrammed grips. The overall condition is Excellent. Original finish. Excellent action, tight all the way around. Shiny bright bore with strong rifling. Fine grips. Markings are sharp. Numbers match.
