About the inscription: Manuf'd For Smith & Wesson Pat'd April 3, 1855. Lucius Wilson Pond was a Worcester, Mass. machinist and inventor began producing cartridge revolvers around 1861, during the American Civil War. Smith and Wesson already controlled the patent for the bored through cylinder. Ponds revolver used a similar cartridge system, and was considered an infringement on S & W's patent. Consequentially, Ponds had to turn over thousands of revolvers to Smith and Wesson, the guns were all stamped "Manufactured For Smith & Wesson Pat'd April 3, 1855". Smith & Wesson sold the guns publicly, paying Pond the costs to manufacture the guns. There are about 4000-4500 of these revolvers made with the Pond/S&W arrangement.
Antique guns are sold as collector items, with no representation as to their safety to shoot or use. These revolvers were made for black powder cartridges only.
