RARE Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD M1817 Pistol with DETACHABLE SHOULDER STOCK
DESIREABLE! 1 of ONLY 1,000 Made & DATED 1818
Description: RARE Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD M1817 Pistol with DETACHABLE SHOULDER STOCK DESIREABLE! 1 of ONLY 1,000 Made & DATED 1818 Here we present a very scarce and desirable antique U.S. Springfield Model 1817 Type II Percussion Conversion Pistol with a slotted shoulder stock, manufactured in 1818. This is an extremely hard to find single shot pistol that was made at the Springfield Arsenal in Springfield, Massachusetts. This pistol was the first of one of only three types of pistols that were ever manufactured at Springfield, with the other two being the Model 1855 pistol-carbine and the Model 1911. This example would have started out life as a flintlock and then converted to the percussion firing system sometime after the more reliable firing system came about. This one features a conversion in which the frizzen hardware was removed, the holes filled and ground down flush to the lock plate; a drum type percussion bolster, and a commercial type hammer—very typical of a Southern armory conversion. This pistol was also made with a slot in the pommel for the detachable butt stock. Both are numbered “12”, so they match. This is a rare feature on an already rare Springfield pistol! The 1817 pistol was originally commissioned for production at the Springfield Armory in 1807. However, prior to the completion of any finished pistols, the production was halted in 1808 when the Board of Ordnance determined at that time that .54 caliber was a more effective bore size for a martial pistol, and a new model, the 1805 was adopted and produced at Harper’s Ferry. This left Springfield with a quantity of roughly 400 locks, 300 barrels, and 1,000 rough cut stocks that were ultimately kept in storage until 1817 when a new superintendent at Springfield, Colonel Roswell Lee, revitalized the pistol project in an apparent effort to clean out the arsenal’s storehouses and make use of some of armories half-finished projects. The pistol project was restarted in 1817 and the first Type I used the approximately 400 locks remaining from the 1807 production. The remaining 600 handguns were referred to as the Type II. These were completed in 1818 and dated 1818 at the breech of the barrel with 1818 dated Springfield marked locks. The tail of the lock is marked “SPRING / FIELD / 1818” with a sharp “Federal Eagle/US” in front of the hammer. The barrel has crisp “P / Eagle Head / V” proof stamps and “1818” at the barrel breech. The left stock flat has clear inspector stamps as well, one of which for John Newbury. This is an extremely scarce U.S. Springfield martial Type II handgun with only 600 produced and very hard to find. The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is dim and smooth. The stock is solid, showing use. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 11 inches. Caliber: .69 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
