The Echelon is Springfield Armory’s newest pistol and is designed with a whole collection of features to make it suitable for the modern world. The word “Echelon” comes from the military phrase “en echelon, which means to stagger one’s own troop formations in a diagonal pattern, with each unit behind and to the right of the one in front of it. This is a very old concept in military tactics, dating at least as far back as the Battle of Leuctra in 371 B.C. when the Thebans used a staggered formation to attack the Spartans. It was a last ditch effort, but the unusual formation worked, and the Thebans were victorious. The Echelon pistol is built to be more modular and adaptable than previous Springfield pistols. To achieve this feat, the Echelon is built around the new Central Operating Group (COG). Similar, but not identical to Sig Sauer’s fire control group, the COG is entirely self-contained and serialized allowing it to be switched between grip modules in a matter of seconds. Granted, the Echelon pistol has one of the best-feeling grip modules out of the box, but opinions may vary. Like most slides, the Echelon’s slide features an optics cut to mount a red dot sight, but the Variable Interface System (VIS) is a little different from the typical optics cut. The Echelon is Springfield Armory’s newest pistol and is designed with a whole collection of features to make it suitable for the modern world. The word “Echelon” comes from the military phrase “en echelon, which means to stagger one’s own troop formations in a diagonal pattern, with each unit behind and to the right of the one in front of it. This is a very old concept in military tactics, dating at least as far back as the Battle of Leuctra in 371 B.C. when the Thebans used a staggered formation to attack the Spartans. It was a last ditch effort, but the unusual formation worked, and the Thebans were victorious. The Echelon pistol is built to be more modular and adaptable than previous Springfield pistols. To achieve this feat, the Echelon is built around the new Central Operating Group (COG). Similar, but not identical to Sig Sauer’s fire control group, the COG is entirely self-contained and serialized allowing it to be switched between grip modules in a matter of seconds. Granted, the Echelon pistol has one of the best-feeling grip modules out of the box, but opinions may vary. Like most slides, the Echelon’s slide features an optics cut to mount a red dot sight, but the Variable Interface System (VIS) is a little different from the typical optics cut. Concealed beneath the slide cover plate, the VIS allows the user to choose between 30 different optics to mount directly onto the slide without having to rely on an adapter to mount them. This is thanks to the use of self-locking pins which can be configured on the slide to match the footprint of the desired optic. As the pins exert lateral pressure on the optic’s interior mounting surface, left and right movement of the optic is completely eliminated. The result is that the VIS provides an unequaled fit between the slide and wide variety of optics. Please keep in mind that there are three sets of pins available for the VIS. The pistol shown here comes with sets 2 and 3. Set #1 and the Echelon Optic Mounting screw kit for the VIS can be found on the Springfield . The Echelon’s slide is designed with four distinct engagement surfaces for manipulating the slide by hand. A forward located trench cut provides a natural index location for press checks and charging the slide. The back of the slide has flared edges for improved purchase. Finally, the slide features front and rear serrations for a firm grip. The grip model features an adaptive grip texture and comes with three different backstrap sizes. As if that wasn’t enough, up to three different grip modules are available based on overall size (small, medium, and large). The trigger guard is naturally oversized for use with gloved fingers in the wintertime. Both the slide stop and magazine release are fully ambidextrous. The Echelon comes in the box with both 17-round and 20-round magazines. Sights consist of a tactical rack U-Notch rear sight and a tritium front sight with luminescent ring. Springfield also offers two other sight configurations: a tritium three-dot night sight set and suppressor-height sights. The new in box pistol shown here has the U-Notch rear and tritium front sight. Barrel length is a respectable 4.5 inches. This pistol comes with two magazines, one a 17-rounder and the other a 20-rounder, three backstraps, a magazine loading tool, the aforementioned pin sets for the VIS, and a 3-round extension for the 17-round magazine, plus a soft case for the Echelon in addition to the box.
