Walther P38 AC 44 Code 9mm Para December Production with Old Holster
Description: The P38 was developed during the 1930’s to replace the famous P.08 Luger pistol. While the Luger was an elegant design, its tight tolerances eventually caused problems once mud, dirt, or other battlefield detritus found its way into the action. The P38 was designed to be simple and easy to operate. More importantly, it was the first locked-breech pistol to use a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger. The combined de-cocker/safety provided an extra measure of safety. Many of the features the P38 pioneered are still in use today, most notable on the Beretta 92FS/M9. Indeed, the P38’s then-unique hinged locking block was later copied by Beretta for the M1951 pistol and later found its way into the design of the 92/M9. The P38 shown here was built at the Walther factory in December of 1944. It has the “X” mark on the left side of the frame indicating that the pistol was captured by the Russians in the last few months of the war, possibly having been taken off the body of a dead German soldier. Alternatively, it may simply have been turned in at the time of surrender. There are import marks are on the underside of the beavertail. The pistol was imported by NHM Co. in Sacramento, California (NHM = New Helvetia Mercantile). Overall, its condition ranges from fair to good. The Waffenamt E/359 stamp is present in the following locations: both sides of the frame, on the trigger bar, left side of the barrel frame, right side of the locking block, and two times on the right side of the slide (one is mostly worn from pitting). There is also an eagle and swastika stamp on the right side as well. The front sight has the number “4” on the left side. The bore has some frosting in the grooves, but the rifling is still well-defined. Accuracy with jacketed bullets should still be decent. The slide and frame both exhibit shallow pitting, the former more so than the latter. As there is bluing present over the pitting, the pistol has been refinished. The Bakelite grips are in fairly good shape. They exhibit light scratches on the surface, but no cracks. Mechanically the pistol functions quite well. The feed ramp can accommodate hollow points just as well as FMJ. One of the nice aspects of the P38 is that is chambered for a cartridge that is widely available, so shooting it just for fun does not cost as much as other military pistols, such as the Japanese Nambu or the British Webley revolver. The P38 does come with a holster, although it is in poor shape. The flap cover is ripped in two for most of its height (i.e., vertically). The leather strap is surprisingly still attached. One of the belt loops is a replacement. SOLD Handgun Caliber: 9x19mm Parabellum (9mm Luger, 9x19mm NATO) Manufacturer: Walther Arms, Inc.
