Webley & Scott Mk I (Navy marked) Cal. .455, Ser. 71XX. Dated 1915.
Description: Inv. 5873 Webley & Scott Mk I (Navy marked) Cal. .455, Ser. 71XX. Dated 1915. This was England’s first "Self-Loading" military firearm. It also turned out to be their last. Total production about 9,250. With about 7,250 going to the Navy and about 500 going to the RAF and the balance sold as commercial. Very rare indeed. This particular 102 year old gun has seen two wars and the scarcity should catch any military collector's attention. The gun is in rather nice condition. The original factory blue remaining is about 90-95%. The loss is due to the usual sharp edge and muzzle silvering. However, the left side of the slide and part of the barrel show a few small patches of surface pin pricks. Probably from lying in a holster as the grip straps and protruding grip safety show no graying. The left rear of the frame has the British Broad Arrow. The right side of the slide has the W&S Flying Bullet logo. The slide, frame and the grip safety are all matching. The left side of the slide also has the small Navy "N" stamped after the manufacturer's Logo as well as the usual British proof marks. The original factory grips are really quite nice. The left grip has a small chip at the bottom, just in front of the lanyard ring. History has shown these MK I grips are rather fragile and in many instances were replaced with striated wood grips by the Navy. It's always nice to have the original, however. The bolt face, slide rails and feed ramp show almost no use. The bore is awesome, penny bright with sharp crisp rifling. There is not even a hint of frosting. Judging by the grip straps and fine condition of the bore, the gun has seen very little use and the missing blue is primarily due to the holster. The gun comes with one proper MK I magazine. This pistol is rather awesome. A very strange dropping slide design in a gun that's surprisingly large. When have you seen another? It will attract attention on the range or in any collection. .......$2895.
