I HAVE A BEAUTIFUL H.J. HUSSEY 12 BORE SXS SPORTING GUN 2 BBL SET CASED IN IT'S ORIGINAL TRUNK CASE SN 14218. 27 inch nitro proof sleeved barrels with game rib marked H.J. HUSSEY LTD., 81 NEW BOND STREET LONDON. Circa - 1898-1911. 27 inch replacement nitro proof barrels with game rib. Barrels marked H.J. HUSSEY 61 PALL MALL ST. JAMES LONDON ENGLAND. BOTH SETS OF BARRELS BY THE MAKER! Case hardened sidelock action 8 pin locks fully engraved with fine foliate scroll and bouquets. Automatic Ejectors. Automatic safety. Churchill top rib on both sets of barrels! Finely checkered straight grip stock of contrasting semi figured walnut. Drop points. Older Silvers type recoil pad. Finely checkered splinter fore end with Anson style release. In it's original top quality leather trunk case of grained leather with green baize interior with it's original maker's label !.
Condition: Excellent, as partially redone. Sleeved original barrels show 98% bluing. Bright bores. Replacement barrels show 96-98% bluing. Bright bores. Polished silver action and triggerguard. Top lever and floorplate showing faded bluing. Refreshed stock shows light handling marks. Original trunk case with Hussey label case in very good condition with loose partition and scuffing to exterior..

H.J. HUSSEY IS CONSIDERED TO BE A LONDON BEST GUN ON A PAR WITH JAMES PURDEY, HOLLAND AND HOLLAND, & BOSS! THIS A VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF HIS WORK AT A GOOD PRICE!
Although the founder of the firm was Henry Joseph Hussey, there was at least one Hussey previously in the gun trade and that was John, gunmaker, recorded at 4 Carpenter Street Grosvenor Square, from 1816 - 1824. He was an expert barrel borer for the great Joseph Manton and is so mentioned in Col. Hawker's diaries in 1827.
It is known that H.J. Hussey was the assistant manager of Holland and Holland and, when he left them in 1894, he went to join James Lang & Co. Ltd. at it's premises at 102 New Bond St. Leaving Lang he went into business on his own in 1898 as H.J. HUSSEY LTD. at 81 New Bond Street and remained there until 1911.

Comments from readers of this: "Attractive gun with two sets of barrels. New set of barrels proved in London, date coded 1980, with maker's name and 61 Pall Mall, St. James's address. Grant & Lang (which became Atkin Grant & Lang in 1960) succeeded to the remanents of the Hussey business in 1930. AG&L was at 61 Pall Mall 1976-1980. So, new barrels are by the maker in 1980. Also has the original barrels, now sleeved, re-proved in London, also date coded 1980, so the original barrels were probably sleeved by the maker at the same time the new barrels were made."
