Blade etched with stands of arms, U.S. Shiels with eagle & E PLURIBUS UNUM. Makers name stamped on the ricasso F. HORSTER SOLINGEN in two lines. Pierced brass D grip & handguard with rose & scrolls. Matching Phrygian Helmet pommell. Brass wire wrapped wood grip covered with sharkskin. No scabbard present. Condition: Excellant with etching & makers mark. Even patina on all surfaces. Sword from the family of and accompanied by a framed image of J.H. Swertsfager, born Fort Plain, New York 1837. Served from 1861-1865 as officer in Company D, 44th. New York Volunteers. Rose in rank from Private to 1st Lieutenant. He was present at Gettysburg on Little Round Top with Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain in their successful effort to repulse the Confederate attackers. SOLD |
