CONFEDERATE DOUBLE EDGED BOWIE KNIFE MARKED W.J. McELROY MACON, GA. 12 3/8 inch spear point blade marked W.J. McELROY MACON, GA. in two lines on the ricasso. Bronze crossguard, the quillions terminating in flat discs. Walnut grip spirely serrated with a bronze cap on top.
DeBow's review of March-April, 1862, reflects that McElroy's firm made all types of swords, and according to this source his output was 20 Infantry swords, bowie knives, naval cutlasses, sergeant's swords, sword belts, straps for same, belt clasps and mountings for same per week. Also about 50 brass cavalry spurs per week. Also made tin canteens and bayonets. McElroy also made Frame belt buckles.
