HOLLIS, ISAAC - 500 3" BPE - AN EXCELLENT & ORIGINAL CLASSIC UNDERLEVER REBOUNDING HAMMER EXPRESS - EXCELLENT PLUS BORES - Near Exhibition Wood - 28" Damascus Barrels - 85% Engraving Coverage - 14 3/8" LOP - Henry Patent Barrels - Very Solid Wood - A Pure Classic Style //////////////////////// I. (Isaac) Hollis & Sons, London: A Very Nice Isaac Hollis 500 3" Black Powder Express Made about 1869 with a Jones Action Underlever Bar-Action with Rebounding Hammers, This gun is a very nice example of a Classic BPE double rifle that has been very well kept, It is with 28" damascus barrels made by Alex. Henry that are numbered 1414 & 1415, Full length rib with 1 standing & 1 folding express sights, Rebounding locks, Percussion style fences, Stanton locks numbered 22042, Cross wedge forend release, Steel engraved grip cap, Sling eyes, 14 3/8" LOP over a full checkered horn buttplate, 8 lbs. 15 oz., Outstanding figured wood with excellent & deep black/brown color & contrast, 85% coverage of well cut period scroll engraving including the hammers, top strap, lever, trigger guard, forend and grip cap, This vintage Classic still retains 30% original case colors, The barrel brown is still original & remains at 30%, The buttstock & forend has finish added but not sanded, Very solid wood in every respect, The wood remains at 88% with handling marks from being around all these years, The checkering is sharp & original and still at 94%, The inside of the forend has 95% case colors, Every screw inside & out is still 95%, The bores are excellent plus condition the entire way, The barrels at 1 in 38" twist and was shot with 120 grains of black powder with both 320 & 380 paper patched bullets, The gun is cased in leather but it is in need of some work . Here is first rate quality, style, grace, workmanship, handling and romance from a great period at the pinnacle of sporting guns in the last years of the 19th century. Isaac Hollis & Sons was established in 1814 and had London offices from 1870 to 1911.
