Stephen Grant & Sons, 67A St. James's Street, London: A Very Nice Grant Falling Block Single Shot in 360 No. 5 Rook (A 38 Long Colt) with a bore & chamber as new, It was made in 1913 (Quite Sure) on a Webley Patent Under-Lever Vertical Falling Block 1902 Action with their round breechblock and flat breech face. Rigby used the Webley 1902 action for their single shot rifles, as did H&H, Greener, Evans, Lancaster, Ingram, Army & Navy and of course Stephen Grant. This Webley action is #11226 and was patented March 15, 1902 as Patent #6365, It has a 27" barrel, Marked "360 No 5 or 380" on the barrel at the breech, 1 standing & 2 folding, Matted flat from the breech to the standing sight & matted 5" in front of the rear sight, A top tang safety with safe in Gold, 14 1/8" LOP over a checkered steel buttplate, Only 6 Lbs. 8 Oz., Original wood with nice fiddleback that has been refinished but very professionally done, Horn forend tip, 45% coverage of very fine period scroll engraving, The barrel & receiver has been professionally reblacked without any of the engraving or markings buffed, The bore and chamber look like they did 100 years ago when it walked out of 67 St. James's door. I am quite sure about the 1913 date as it is penciled inside the forend "W/S 7941" and that is an absolute Grant serial number area. Mr. Grant started in the trade on his own in 1867 and died January 21, 1898. In 1925 Stephen Grant joined with Joseph Lang. In the 1930's Grant & Lang joined with Atkin, Beesley, Hellis, Hussey, Watson Bros. and Lancaster. In 1960 the firm was operating as Atkin, Grant & Lang and by 1971 it was Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang.
