Now, from what I’ve been told regarding this piece, these were used by buyers of buffalo hides to weigh the hides and thus being able to tally up the price. It has several hooks and methods for doing this task, depending on the hide, the weights to be tabulated, and the method it was to be attached to an overhead support. Likely these scales were purchased at trading posts and used out on the frontier for weighing most items when a standard scale was not available; hides, meat, grain sacks, or anything else that could be attached to the hooks. Iron construction with a brass insert scale face. A scarce mid-to-late 19th Century “frontier” item and one not often seen for sale anywhere. Also makes a great item to be displayed with a Buffalo Hunting collection. About VG as described. $185 SOLD |
