Description: A triangular bayonet with 17 1/16" long blade, 3/4" across the flat. At the ricasso markings are a crown over opposing broad arrow surplus sale marks and letter "G" and a very weak "crown over GS"?? 19 5/8 long overall with the locking ring a solid piece with no screw. Barrel diameter measurements are .805 at the back and .792 at the front socket. The socket measures 2 1/16" long and has an unusual locking ring with no screw to allow for removal. The ring had to be fitted prior to the final stamping or forming of the socket. A friend Dave Pratt has informed us that this is a Pat. 53 altered to fit the 1871 Mauser and possibly the Japanese order for 6000 1871 Mausers. In any event, a mystery solved and a uncommon bayonet.
