Description:
Serial #1291. This is a ca. 1897, gilded oak-framed board which measures 57 1/2" x 40" and has a slightly worn dark green background with central "Success" calendar vignette by artist A.B. Frost. The board supports a total of 226 items (182 cartridges, 20 shotshells, 9 cap/primer tins, and 15 single bullets) arranged in the iconic "Double-W" pattern and exhibits some muting of the colors on both the printed backing and the brass shells which have developed a mild yellow-ochre patina. Additionally, there is some minor moisture damage along the top of the board as well as a few small marks and blemishes scattered about the surface of the paper itself. Two of the cartridges are non-original replacements (the .43 Spanish and the Sharps 3 1/4"); there are newer wire loops holding five of the other cartridges; and three cartridges appear to have replacement paper-patched bullets. The backing paper on the reverse is 98% intact with only a few small spots of damage opposite the cartridges noted above. The paper has dark brown foxing and age toning but the original serial number stencil is still crisp and clear, as is the original printed backing label: "PRESENTED WITH COMPLIMENTS/-OF THE-/Winchester Repeating Arms Co./PLEASE HANG IN A PROMINENT PLACE". This is a fine example of a highly desirable Winchester cartridge board that has an unusually high number of original components and is in fine condition - a fantastic decorative piece for a gun room or study.
