Description:
This L.C. Smith Grade 2 Hammerless, 16 ga, side by side shotgun is nicely finished, retaining approximately 95% of the original blue on the barrels and approximately 50% of the blue on the trigger guard. The case coloring on the receiver has faded with time. The color on the lock plates has faded as well, however the usual engraved ducks in a circle on the right lock plate and a quail in a circle on the left, along with the scroll work, are well defined. All screws are in excellent condition. We rate this gun overall at 85%. Barrels are proof marked Crown Steel. Barrel length is 28 inches. The barrel rib above the chamber is marked "HUNTER ARMS CO., FULTON N.Y." on a single line. Bores are shiny and show no damage. The English walnut stock is nicely figured and has the half pistol grip. The pistol grip and the forend are checkered. The forend has a black hardwood insert at the tip. LOP (front trigger) is 14 1/4 inches. Drop Heel is 2 7/8 inches.  A total of 12,477 Grade 2 guns were made from 1892 to 1912. However, only 793 Grade 2, 16 gauge guns were built. This Grade 2 has automatic ejectors, making it a rare gun within a group of already rare guns. The serial number, 204584, puts date of manufacture as 1905. Appears to be mechanically sound. However, you should not consider firing this weapon before it is examined by a competent gunsmith. This firearm qualifies as a "Curio and Relic".
