Description:
This sword measures 34 3/4" overall with a 28 1/4" straight, single-edged blade having long single fullers. The steel has a lightly freckled bright patina with a few very minor nicks along the edge as well as clear "US/JH/1864" and Ames Mfg. Co. scroll trademark stamps on both sides of the ricasso. The cast brass hilt has a mild yellow-ochre patina with a clear "JH" inspector mark on the knucklebow. The sword is housed in its original scabbard which has moderately dented brass throat and chape and heavily crazed black leather that has become weak just above the chape. This is a very good plus example of a war-dated sword and is in very good condition overall.
