Description:
***   SOLD   ***   This is a superb example of a Best London sidelever hammergun from this highly respected gunmaker, made when hammerguns were heading for their zenith in terms of design and aesthetics. The gun was undoubtedly actioned by EC Hodges himself as shown by the trademark stamps on the breech face. Number 2 of a pair with a serial number of 3879 this fine Grant was made in 1875. This gun is just in from Great Britain where it was completely refurbished by Toby Barclay of Heritage Guns UK.   ***   The action is a typical back action sidelock design but with the addition of a sidelever. Adorned with Best Fine Foliate Scroll engraving, finely chiseled percussion fences, Hare’s Ear rebounding hammers and 30” TIG sleeved barrels nitro proofed for 2-3/4” cartridges this is a handsome  and good handling gun indeed. Overall weight is 7lb even.   ***   The 30” TIG sleeved nitro proof 2-3/4” barrels are topped by a concave gamestyle rib. The right barrel has a bore diameter of 0.728 with a constriction of 0.012 constriction for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.037. The left barrel also has a bore diameter of 0.728 and has a constriction of 0.025 for an Improved Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.037.   ***   The straight hand stock and splinter forend are crafted from highly figured walnut and the stock is slightly cast off for the right handed shot. The forend has a Deeley fastener and an engraved steel tip. The length of pull is 14-5/8” over a 3/4” leather pad. Drop at Comb is 1-11/16” by 2-5/8”.   ***   Over the last decade, the sidelever has become the most sought after operating mechanism by collectors of antique shotguns and this represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of these lovely guns. The 30" barrels have been TIG sleeved and proofed for 2 ¾" nitro cartridges and this all adds up to a strong gun that is a joy to shoot and should give many years of service on game or clays with normal maintenance.   ***   See this gun and other fine doubles at The Vintage Cup held at Dover Furnace Shooting Grounds in Dover Plains, New York September 25th through September 28th.
