Description:
Serial #523m, 9mm Para., 4" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This extremely rare handgun is a "byf", "42" dated pistol that retains 95-97% of the original blue finish with nearly all matching numbers (the hold-open is numbered "73" and the extractor is "28"). There is some mild silvering along the exposed edges and projections while the muzzle does exhibit a small amount of pinprick pitting pitting as well. Additionally, there is an unobtrusive importer mark along the underside of the barrel. The black Bakelite "Black Widow" grips are likewise in excellent shape with only some minor surface wear and flattening of the points. This is one of the last Mauser-produced Lugers which were diverted from German military channels under a Portuguese government contract at the end of World War II. It is interesting to note that although given their own special designation (Model 943), all of the pistols had full German military acceptance markings and "byf" coding. Numbering about 5000 pistols in all, they are numbered between 149m and 5322m (it is not known if this range is fully inclusive). Many of them (including this one) were subsequently imported into Canada during the 1980's and this example still has its original dark brown leather Portuguese flap holster which is intact and in very good serviceable condition and also comes with an original metal cleaning rod. This is one of the rarest of the World War II Lugers, in excellent condition, and would make a stellar addition to any collection. {Ref. "Third Reich Lugers and Their Accessories" by Jan C.
