Description:
S# 6882, 30 US (30-40 Krag), 24 inch barrel, bright excellent bore. This 1898 MFG rifle features a special order 24 inch barrel (standard 28 inch) and hard rubber shotgun buttplate. This early fluted receiver rifle has a first type hammer, early caliber marking, first type tang marking, springless firing pin retractor, and does not have second hole for tang sight. The barrel is marked "Nickel Steel Barrel especially for Smokeless Powder" with no dashes. The receiver is engraved H.G.C. Jr 1898 on left side below the factory markings. This is well done but certainly not of Winchester Factory quality. Rifle retains 75% blue with wear, scratches and light scattered oxidation staining. Hammer still shows strong case colors. Wood is very good with scratches and marks from use. Forend has an impact mark on left side, butt shows a crack on left by top tang with a couple small round impact marks on right and scratched in "RD" initials. This comes with a Cody zip sheet showing 1898 MFG, 24 inch barrel with 4-1-1898 shipping date, R&R 7-30-1898 and R&R 3-12-1902. The shotgun butt is not mentioned, however butstock fits perfectly and appears original. Model 1895 rifles with shorter than standard barrels are quite rare, rubber shotgun butplates are also very rare. This 1895 will enhance any Winchester collection.
