Description:
Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Carbine in 45.70 Gov.  An authentic carbine (rear sight is marked 'c' for carbine), and not a cut down rifle, this is a very uncommon example of an antique American firearm; only 20,000 were produced.  Serial number dates this carbine to 1887.  Bore is in great shape, and despite the poor picture quality, has a shiney bore with strong rifling.  Action is tight and functional, lock is crisp.  Buttplate has correct hinging trap door, no cleaning kit present.  Cavalry loop intact.  Metal finish is low with a light patina in places, no visible rust.  Stock is solid and sound, possibly lightly sanded a long time ago, no cartouches present.  A short crack runs just behind the lock but appears to have been repaired at some point.  Another hairline crack on the left side of the stock just behind the action, again looks to have been repaired.  Possible small chip beside the cavalry loop swivel, once again, repaired.  A very nice example of a hard to find carbine.
