Description:
An original two piece box of 42 metallic cartridges for the Spencer and Joslyn Carbines. Joslyn carbines were issued to a relatively small number of Union cavalry troops during the Civil War. This box, in this condition, is one of the rarest to be found. It was manufactured by Crittenden & Tibbals in South Coventry Conn. At that time, they were the largest cartridge maker in the world. As the labels states, these cartridges were made specifically for the .56-56 Spencer and Joslyn carbines. The Union order for these was placed in September of 1863. The total quantity was just over 50,000, which by Union cartridge contracts of the day was minuscule. To put it into perspective, in that month alone, there were Army contracts for over 3,000,000 56-56 Spencer cartridges. The box is in fine condition, with a small separation at one edge. There are 6 separate packages of 7 cartridges inside the box.
