Description:
Serial #98, .54 caliber, 36" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of freckling along its length. This is a handsome musket that remains in its original flintlock configuration and has not been altered in any way. The barrel tang is dated 1830 with "P/(eagle head)/V" proof and serial number underneath ("98"). The underside of the barrel on the breech end is marked "10//1" over "H 4". The barrel has a gray/brown patina along its length with some original bright metal in the protected areas. The one piece walnut stock has three barrel bands with a small "8" on the bottom tip of the upper band and an overall freckled plum-brown patina. The stock flat has a visible but illegible cartouche and the sideplate is not marked or numbered. The edges of the stock flat are sharp and there is a small with-the-grain crack on the left running backwards from the barrel breech to the rear sideplate screw at the top of the sideplate. There are some light handling marks and surface blemishes scattered about the wood but gouges, cracks or splits other than noted above. The buttplate is marked "US" on the tang and has a mild brown patina that matches the other furniture. The triggerguard is marked "EA" ahead of the sling swivel and the lockplate is marked, "(eagle)/US" with "SPRING/FIELD/1830" behind the cock which does have a hairline 1/4" crack on the rear curve. The inside of the lock is marked "51" and the mainspring is bright with the bridle, tumbler, and sear exhibiting bright niter blue. The trumpet-shaped ramrod is 36 1/8" in length and appears to be the original and correct. These muskets are extremely rare with a production run of only 307 total; 154 with 36" barrels like this example and 153 with 40" barrels. Consequently, they are almost never seen for sale in any condition. This one remains unconverted in its original flintlock configuration with a high degree of original condition remaining; an investment grade opportunity for the advanced US martial arms collector.
