Description:
Serial #173657, .31 caliber, 5" octagon barrel with a very good, bright bore that has some minor freckling along its length. This is an 1860 manufactured revolver that has all matching numbers including the wedge and arbor with the barrel retaining 70% plus of the original bright blue finish that has flaked to a gray-brown patina on the muzzle and breech. The frame and lever have muted original color case-hardening remaining which have turned to a pleasant bluish gray speckled patina while the cylinder, which is predominantly mottled gray, has virtually all of the original stagecoach scene remaining with excellent and un-flattened safety studs along the rear face. The backstrap and triggerguard have a few tiny traces of silver remaining on protected areas but are now an overall pale yellow-ochre color throughout with some spots of ruddy tarnish starting to form along the backstrap. The walnut grip is likewise in excellent shape retaining 90-95% of the original piano varnish finish with some mild flaking at the triggerguard bow and some very minor wear at the sides of the butt. The revolver is tight with firm lock-up and the action functions flawlessly. The revolver is housed in an original walnut five compartment case that has its original velvet upholstery and lining (once eggplant colored but now aged to an overall dark brown). The diagonal partition on the right side and the barrel rest are later (but still quite old) replacements, some of the other partitions are a bit loose and may have been re-glued, and there is a small amount of damage to the inside lip of the compartment walls. A shallow depression which follows the grain of the wood runs across the top of the lid and there are some seam gaps appearing at the corners. Also included with the revolver are an original Colt dual cavity brass mould, an original American eagle powder flask, and a period cap tin (empty). This is a fantastic cased '49 Pocket with lots of original condition and is as tight as a drum; an excellent acquisition for any collection. ANTIQUE
