Description:
FINAL 3 DAYS REDUCED TO $2,400 - I'M REMOVING THIS ITEM AT THE END OF DEC. TO LIST AT A NATIONAL PREMIER SALE, SO BUY IT NOW AND SAVE THE BUYER'S PREMIUM.  A.J. Peavey Clasp Knife Pistol Serial #561 22RF, 3 1/2" barrel with a good bore and a 3 1/2" knife blade. Overall length is a little less than 4 1/2". A fine example of the rare Peavey Patent knife pistol invented by A. J. Peavey of South Montville, Maine that combined a folding pocket knife and single shot .22 caliber pistol with smoothbore barrel that could also be used as an alarm gun. The steel parts retain a smooth clean gun-metal patina. The brass frame is very fine with an attractive patina. The ebony scales are smooth, flush with the sides of the brass "frame" and show a couple small handling marks. The Peavey name and patent dates are visible on the side of the hammer. The folding knife blade and pistol breechblock/hammer unit pivot on one arbor. The breech block is locked and unlocked via a spring loaded fingernail latch at the rear of the weapon (the breech rises for loading, etc.). The hammer, looking somewhat like a second knife blade, and folding trigger act in conjunction so that the pistol is cocked and ready to fire when the breech is closed. The hammer can then be lowered and the weapon carried in the pocket and cocked by hand. The firing pin rotates and serves as the extractor. The trigger and rear of the frame have holes drilled so that a cord may be attached to the trigger and with the knife blade used to anchor the weapon in door or window frame, the arm becomes an "Alarm Pistol". The mechanism seems to function well except needs a little adjustment as the hammer falls when the barrel is closed unless manually held open and the latch spring seems to be missing . The knife blade appears to have had little use or sharpening. Given the quite limited number of these knife pistols encountered today, it would appear few have survived. This is a late "second type" example, likely one of the only 600 or so estimated to have been produced. Manufactured 1866-1870. I was able to find two of these that sold at well over my asking price . Both appeared to have had the blade broken and shortened. This one is original. It was made when black powder was used, so is NOT SAFE to use with modern ammunition.  Is not classified as a firearm by BATF, so can be shipped directly. Buyer pays shipping of $25 including insurance.
