Everyone is aware of the break open Smith Civil War carbine. According to available sources, Smith attempted to make Sporting rifles after the war using some of the left over parts. Nobody knows how many were ever made but this one is stamped 32 for a serial number. I have never seen nor heard of another example nor has anyone I have spoke with and it is not in any of the Single Shot books. The action is just like a Civil War model that is now a basic gun metal color. The barrel is a heavy 25 3/4" Octagon. Breech loading. The trigger guard has most of the original fire blue finish. The barrel retains almost all of the original blue finish. The deluxe fiery grain stock is like new and there is a number 1909-57 stamp filled white that has to be some sort of museum or inventory number. The smooth steel butt plate still has most of the fire blue finish as well. Bore is mint as is action. There are no caliber markings but appears to be about a 40 cal. Has three folding rear sights. Forend has pewter tip and back of forend. Probably made around 1865-67. Antique so no paper work.
