Description:
ORNATE GOLD INLAID FRENCH FLINT/PERC. CONVERSION OFFICER’S PISTOL BY F. & A. PENEL CA. 1760-70. 14” o/a with 8” gold inlaid .58 caliber barrel signed in a gold cartouche ‘F. & A. PENEL”. Barrel breech plug engraved “2” indicating it was once one of a pair. Lock signed in script “F. & A. PENEL/FRERES”. Converted to percussion circa 1830’s. Penel Brothers of St. Etienne were among the very best makers of that famous gun making town in the mid 18th Century. There arms exhibit some of the most ornate stock carving and gold metal inlay of the time as this pistol exhibits. Fine walnut stock which is beautifully carved. Blued and gold barrel. Blued steel mounts with fancy silver butt cap with bust of a musketeer and an ornate silver wrist escutcheon surmounted by a Royal Crown with the center cartouche engraved with a family crest. Exceptionally fine with almost all the blue and original stock finish. Working order. With the original ramrod with it’s original steel tip still intact. Truly exceptional quality and condition.
