RIFLE MUSKET ALTERED TO MUSKETOON CIRCA 1862. 37” part octagon part round .58 caliber barrel. Rear sight removed and front sight replaced with a simple brass bead. Old steel ramrod which is probably a Confederate field replacement. Original lock plate stamped forward of the hammer “857”. Original three band Austrian rifle musket imported in large numbers by the Confederate States during the Civil War. Many altered to musketoon late in the war to lighten them usually by removing the front two bands and shortening the barrel and the stock. Well used with nice dark metal with the original patina. Stock with all the old original patina as well with a little bit of old dry wood filler about the butt plate which is now very dark and cracking. Lock in working order. Forward trigger guard tang screw now missing. Made them easier to use on horseback and in hit and run tactics of the Partisan Rangers late in the war. Collected in Northern Virginia in the early post WW2 era and acquired by us from a descendant of the collector. SOLD Antique: Yes |
