Description:
NSN, .577 Caliber, 28" octagonal barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore. This is an attractive back action rifle that has an overall darkly mottled plum-brown patina along the barrel, darkest at the breech, with a darker plum-black patina on the lock and hammer. The breech has an engraved boar's head with two encircling platinum bands and a platinum blow out plug on the nipple bolster. The "HORTON SALOP" (Shropshire) marked lock is nicely engraved with tight floral scroll and a reclining stag vignette. The lock is tight and fully functional although the inner side of the cupped hammer face is broken. The half-length walnut stock has an old added varnish over numerous small handling marks and bruises and is fastened by a single wedge with plain oval escutcheons. There is an ornately engraved, lightly freckled triggerguard with scallop shell finial and pitted floral scroll along the exterior of the bow. The checkering is still strong and the buttstock has numerous small handling marks and blemishes including some cracks on the underside of the wrist and on the left side opposite the lock. The lightly freckled buttplate stands a bit proud of the wood, especially along the top tang. The gun comes with a replaced wooden ramrod held by two plain thimbles and a ridged tail-pipe. Vacant sling swivel eyelets are present on the gun. This is a handsome gun in fine condition and would make a fine addition to a collection. Antique
