Description:
#6197, E. J. Churchill Gunmakers Ltd., Gunworks, Leicester Square, London: A Churchill Boxlock Ejector 12 Bore Utility Model Game Gun Made in 1939 with 25" Ejector Dovetail Lump Sleeved Barrels with a Rib Extension Third Bite, Proved in Birmingham at 3 Tons with 2 1/2" chambers, The bores at .731 .006 & .010" (Skt.I & Imp.Cyl.), 2 1/2" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .039" & .040" on the left, Double triggers, Splinter forend, Straight hand stock at 14 3/4" x 1 9/16 x 2 7/16" over a 1/2" buttplate, A lot of Cast-Off for the right hand, 6 lbs. 11 oz., 85% coverage of period rose and scroll engraving, No case colors remain, The barrel blue at 88% plus, The buttstock replaced but very well done and I presume it was done at the time the barrels were sleeved, The butt and forend remain at 90%, The forend wood is original to the gun, The checkering remains at 94%, The bores have surface blemishes but nothing with any depth, It is tight to the face, It was the #2 gun of a pair. This is just an honest British Boxlock with a lot of hunting life left. On walk up bird shooting over dogs 25" barrels work absolutely as efficient as longer barrels in the hands of the average upland hunter. ///////////////////////// E. J. Churchill set up shop in 1891 at 8 Agar St. Strand, London. They moved to Leicester Square in 1925 (The address of this gun) and then to Orange Street in 1934 in Leicester Square; E. J. Churchill died in 1910 & Robert Churchill died in 1958. By 1971 the firm was operating as Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang at 7 Bury Street.
