The brothers John and Joseph are credited for the development of the modern shotgun. Joseph Manton was considered the most inventive brain in the firearms field of his period. At one time Thomas Boss and James Purdey were employed by Joseph Manton, also William Bishop of Westley Richards, Joseph Brazier of lock fame and Charles Lancaster all were influenced by Joseph Manton. Manton & Co. was started in Calcutta in 1825 and was still dealing in Big Game Rifles, Winchester, Mauser, FN, Smith & Wesson, Browning A5's and Webley well into the 20th century. They were also at 116 Jermyn Street in London but this Manton #68797 was built in Birmingham on a very solid trade action of the proper size and weight.
