Description:
#24354, W.J. Jeffery & Co. Ltd, 26 Bury St., St. James. London: A 450/400 3" Nitro Express Double Rifle Made in 1913 with 24" Krupp Steel Chopper Lump Extractor barrels with dolls head rib extension plus a third bite, 1/4 rib with 1 standing & 4 folding rear sights, Ramp front sight, Proved at 55 Cordite with a 400 grain bullet, Double triggers, Bushed strikers, 14 5/8" over a checkered butt with engraved steel heel & toe plates, 10 lbs. 2 oz., Sling eyes, The sides of the action are engraved with the Indian jungle scene that is often seen on this grade of Jeffery, Very nice wood with nice color and contrast, The buttstock and forend wood remains super solid with a lifetime of game field use left in both the forend and buttstock, The buttstock & forend wood is original & stout, The strength to this gun is the bore & wood condition, The bores remain excellent plus and almost look like the day they walked out of Jeffery's showroom, I believe the barrel blue has been redone but a long time ago and it remains at 94%, The wood finish is great at 90%, The checkering is super at 98%, All Jeffery's have a dolls head but most are without the third bite, This gun reflects the later action body that incorporated the hidden third bite, Here is a super solid rifle, I have seen my fair share of Jeffery boxlock 450/400 3" double rifles but this is one of the best relative the superb bores and the stout wood. This piece is ready for another 101 years of service as it was intended from day one; incredible these classic old doubles. Serious rifles have two barrels, everything else just burns gunpowder. There are double rifles and then there are serious double rifles. ///////////////////////// Jeffery was already well known at the turn of the century but notice was certainly taken with their impressive line of Double Rifles. They had a large range of cartridges from .280, .333, and 404, 450 #2, 475 #2 and the famous 600 Nitro. Jeffery was at the 13 King Street address until 1914, they moved to 26 Bury Street and then to 9 Golden Square in 1921. The Jeffery firm remained in business until 1955, in 1957 Westley Richards purchased the firm and then in 1959 it was merged with Holland & Holland.
