Description:
Serial #11183 (both guns), .42 caliber percussion, 10? octagon barrels with excellent, bright bores. These exquisite pistols retain nearly all of their original lustrous rust blue finish on the wedge-fastened barrels with some very minor fading along the the edges of the facets and at the muzzle crowns. The locks, spurred trigger guards, breech bolsters, wedge escutcheons, and grip caps likewise retain almost all of their original color case-hardened finish while bright original nitre bluing is still present on the sights and tang screws. The highly figured European walnut stocks have almost no handling marks or blemishes in their original finish and the tight checkering points are still sharp with practically no flattening or wear. The locks function flawlessly and are mated to conventional, non-adjustable triggers that have crisp let-off without any discernible creep. Simple sights are fitted (the rear sights are adjustable for elevation)and the pistols are not maker marked on the exterior but are both Liege proofed on the undersides of the barrels (all of the markings are hidden from view when the guns are assembled, a common practice for pistols made for dueling). The pistols are housed in their original French-fitted oak case with an old replacement green baize lining and a full complement of original and period accessories: turned wood cleaning rod/rammer with original bullet worm, non-original spare brass cleaning jag head, single cavity bullet mould with rotating sprue cutter, turn-screw, nipple wrench, pewter oil bottle, walnut percussion cap box, powder measure, and a small pistol flask with adjustable patent charger top. The case is in very good condition with some minor surface blemishes scattered about the added varnish finish and the brass keyhole escutcheon for the functional lock is detached, however the key is still present and included with the set. The wood has a few minor drying cracks on the lid and the round brass presentation plaque is blank. This is a truly beautiful cased set of pistols that are of superb build quality and retain a striking and unusual amount of their original metal and wood finish. The lack of embellishments and lack of maker markings simply adds to their allure as dueling pistols as well. They rate excellent condition and would make a stellar addition to any fine collection of firearms or even 19th century art. Antique
