Metal is smooth grey with some raised frost, but not rusty. Came from a new England attic. Wood is good some field dings and the saddle bar has a dent long time ago.SN 7599.This is a good representative example of a Second Model Maynard carbine, (also known as the Model 1863), manufactured from 1863 to 1865, with approximately 20,000 total production. Three line "MASS. ARMS CO." address on the right front of the frame and four line "1851/1859" Maynard patent marking on the left side. 3 3/4 inches of the breech end of the barrel is octagon and the left side flat is marked with the inspectors mark "G.W.S.". The barrel is grey and the remaining parts casehardened faded to grey. It is equipped with a pinched blade dovetail front sight and a three leaf folding rear sight . Saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the receiver. The serial number is stamped on the lower tang. The stock is a straight grip with no forearm and the left side wrist is marked with one boxed cartouche "JM". Among the Union cavalry regiments armed with these Maynards were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. SOLD Antique: Yes |
