Description: This is a striking item which has a lightly corroded 1936 Olympia Erinnerungsmedaille suspended from a red, white, and black War Merit medal ribbon and permanently mounted on a faded velvet backing within a tiered, carved wooden frame (11" x 13") that is still sealed on the back and still has the intact Leipzig frame maker's label pasted on. There is a penciled date on the back as well: (1-2-44). The age toned matting is now a mellow tan color with a small handwritten ink label that reads: "Untersturmfuhrer. G. Bock. 9(te?). Pz. Gr. Reg/Ein Volk. Ein Reich. Ein Fuhrer". The rank of Untersturmfuhrer was equivalent to a 2nd Lieutenant in the Allgemeine and Waffen-SS but from the unit listing it seems that he instead joined the regular army (Heer) and served in the 9th Panzergrenadier Regiment (26th Panzer Division). A further check of German Olympic staff and officials reveals that there was a "G. Bock" connected with the shooting events held during the games. Further research might shed some light on whether the two are connected, related, or the same person. This is a fantastic World War II item and is in fine condition overall.
