Only 59 contracted by the Federal Government and delivered for Staff Officer’s and delivered in the first year of the Civil War for distribution or sale to higher ranking officer’s of the regular army or political officer’s deemed worthy of consideration. All original and fine with blade etched in patriotic motifs and inspected on the ricasso “U.S./G.G.S./1861” and with Ames address etched above and stamped on the obverse as well. Scabbard top mount stamped “AMES MFG. CO./CHICOPEE/MASS.”. Fine overall with the original sharkskin grip wrap and brass wire. Blade and scabbard with the original finish. Both scabbard top ring mount and the face of the guard are scratched in very old letters “JWK”. In searching records of officer’s who ascended to staff rank that year we found only one who matched-Lt. Col. Joseph Warren Keifer of the 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
