Description:
Boss Single Shot Blank “Derringer”. Invented by L. Holt & J. C. Marshall, Springfield Massachusetts. Manufactured by Dexter Smith (son of Horace Smith of S&W). Distributed by Buckland Brothers, wholesale jewelers of Springfield, c. 1870’s. Formerly believed to have been made by Hopkins & Allen. Quantity unknown; likely  few hundred; quite scarce. Patented April 22, 1873. Although intended strictly as a 22 Rimfire blank noise-maker pistol, it does accept a 22 Short cartridge and likely would quite dangerous if fired as the barrel is a much larger smooth bore caliber. Extremely simple mechanism; hammer and trigger one-place. You pull the hammer back, load the blank, and let the hammer fall which detonates the blank, it does not have a “cocked” position. Nickname, with others of their type. “ Fourth of July pistol”.
Brass frame made without trigger guard. 2” barrel marked on top 1776 and on side PAT APR.22.73. Scarce in brass frame.
