Description:
Serial #1389/PAS270G, 7.5 x 54mm, 23? barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of mild freckling within the grooves. This is a very rare rifle which was designed following World War I in order to provide France with a military longarm that chambered a more useful and modern cartridge than the venerable but cumbersome 8mm Lebel. Originally, the French adopted a 7.5mm cartridge with a 58mm bottleneck casing but soon redesigned the cartridge to be shorter (7.5 x 54mm) in order to prevent the rifles from chambering the 7.92 x 57mm Mauser which did fit in the longer 58mm chambers (with catastrophic results when fired). Most of the 1100 or so M27 rifles were chambered in the newer, shorter cartridge as is this example. The rifle itself was made by shortening the 1886 Lebel and replacing the original tubular magazine with a Mauser type, staggered five round box magazine and a new 900 meter rear sight fitted. This rifle retains 92-95% of an armory applied black enamel finish that has flaked along the high edges and projections with some surface scratches and marks throughout. The matching numbered bolt has an overall armory bright finish but with a plum-brown patina on the handle and cocking-piece. Likewise, the matching numbered forend and buttstock are in fine shape with several minor handling marks and small blemishes scattered about the military oil finish and a visible but illegible unit marking on the buttplate tang. An original leather sling is installed which has some minor crazing, wear, and scuffs but is otherwise still serviceable and in very good shape. The M27 Lebel was only intended as an inexpensive stop-gap and was never adopted, consequently very few are still in existence and this example is in fine plus condition and would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
