Description:
This sturdily built cartridge box has a sliding cover with black printed yellow label marked "Capt. Chas. F. Winter" in pen, "V1/Boxer Ammunition /for .577 bore/Snider rifles/cartridges 500." Ink stamp marks are "Rifle FG 54", "C104, 8/9/69", 9 /12/R, 61-2-cross. Punch marks are "T broad arrow A" W broad arrow D", "WinC" "1868" and "R.C.D." The carry handle is a spliced rope. Another stamp is 'R. Adams'. Appears to be made of oak fastened with slot head brass wood screws and copper nails. A great pre Zulu war cartridge box. This is a very early and scarce box with the 1868 date. The mark V1 cartridge was approved in October 1868, see page 98 of Ian Skennerton's "577 Snider and Enfield Rifles and Carbines". An excellent example of a very early and scarce box with only a small split on the left bottom edge. Uncleaned and in as found condition.
