(James) Lawson, 70 Argyle St., Glasgow: A Very Nice Scottish 450 3 1/4" Black Powder Express, A Jones Action Underlever Back-Action with Rebounding Hammers, This gun is a very nice example of a Classic BPE double rifle from Scotland that has been very well kept, It is with 28" steel barrels with a dolls head extension, Full length rib with 1 standing & 2 folding express sights, Rebounding locks, Percussion style fences, Side swing forend release, Horn grip cap, Sling eyes, 14 1/2" LOP over a smooth face buttplate, 8 lbs. 15 oz., Outstanding figured wood with excellent & deep black/brown color & contrast, 70% coverage of well-cut period scroll engraving including the hammers, top strap, lever, trigger guard and forend, This vintage Classic still retains 40% original case colors, The barrels reblacked in England & now at 100% with near perfect striking that appears only reblacked and not polished, The buttstock & forend had oil added but not sanded, Very solid wood in every respect, The wood remains at 90%, The checkering is sharp and at 98%, The toe of the stock was cracked both sides to the initial plate but professionally glued and now is nearly as solid as new, The screws are very good to excellent, The bores are excellent plus condition the entire way and totally free of any wear or pitting, The gun is cased in its original leather brass cornered trunk with the original and very rare trade label, The lining redone in England. Here is first rate quality, style, grace, workmanship, handling and romance from a great period at the pinnacle of sporting guns in the last years of the 19th century. J. Lawson was established in 1890 and was still in business in 1913. This classic came to these shores within the last couple of months.
