Description:
#4680 Evans New Model Sporting Rifle, 28” octagon barrel, 44-EVANS Long caliber, “barn found condition” having a thin crusty deep brown patina on the metal. The frame has some medium pitting (especially on top), the barrel is smooth with no pitting of consequence. Filthy dark dusty bore complete with spiders, cockroaches, and various other forms of deceased insect life, all mixing with lead build-up and black powder residue. May clean to be a decent bore …or may clean to be a sewer pipe. Decent wood with no serious deficits aside of a small crack at the front top of the stock and small chip on the forearm, otherwise just the usual bumps and bruises along with a dark patina. Mechanically it does need a trigger, a couple of screws, and the dust-cover, but otherwise it looks to be complete and easily restorable. These Evans’ were VERY unusual guns, not only in their clumsy appearance but also in their history. They were the only rifle ever manufactured in any mass quantity in the state of Maine …and the Evans still holds the record for numbers of rounds held in a non-removable magazine rifle. Made between 1873-1879, the Evans never could achieve the popularity to be a serious contender to Winchester, and consequently they eventually went bankrupt in 1879. This was the last model and quite scarce when found with the more handsome octagon barrel (most were round barreled guns). Well worth a little time and some “elbow grease” to clean up and install a trigger; the dust cover would not be necessary, but would complete the gun. Good+ $995
