#8794, J. Purdey, 314 1/2 Oxford Street, London: A 12 Bore Best Quality Original 2 Barrel Set Toplever Rebounding Hammer Island Lock Game Gun Made in 1872 for Mr. A. Flower with 2 Each Extractor Damascus barrels, One set is 30" & the other 29 3/8"; The 30" barrels at .760 .005" (Skt.I) in the right barrel - .752 .004" (Skt.I) in the left barrel, 2 3/4" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .022" and .025" on the left, Forcing cones opened; The 29" barrels at .757 .029 & .029" (Imp.Mod. & Imp.Mod), 2 3/4" chambers, Wall thickness on the right barrel at .024" and .025" on the left, Forcing cones opened; It has a full length set of Briley insert tubes in 28 bore fitted to the 30" barrels at .552 .006 - .009 - .014 & .019" (Imp.Cyl. - Skt.II - Mod. & Imp.Mod.), 2 3/4"; Purdey bolting using Scott's spindle patent #2752 of 1865, Double triggers, Dolphin hammers, Percussion fences, Splinter forend with a wedge fastener, Straight hand stock at 14 3/16 x 1 5/8 x 2 1/2" over a 1" removable leather pad with plugs, Neutral stock for the right or left hand, Game gun weight at 6 lbs. 9 oz., With the 28 bore Briley tubes it is 7 lbs. 6 oz., Excellent wood with great black/brown contrast with deep color, 65% coverage of period Purdey style scroll engraving, This piece remains in very nice condition, The barrels rebrowned and remain at 94%, Traces of case colors remain, The stock re-oiled and now at 96%, The checkering at 85%, The bores are bright & shiny, The barrels ring with a pronounced chime, Stanton rebounding locks from patent #367 of 1867, It is cased in what certainly appears to be the original brass cornered oak & leather trunk with an original Purdey trade label, The case interior in very nice condition with a good number of accessories. The Briley insert tubes with all accessories and paperwork.
