This is an attractive back action rifle that has an overall darkly mottled plum-brown patina along the barrel with patches of dark pitting at the breech and a matching patina on the lightly engraved lock and hammer. The breech too has light floral engraving as well as three encircling bands and a clear ?J. HARDER/ATHENS, PA? (active ca. 1838-1860) marking on the top flat just ahead of the breech. A vacant drilled and tapped hole is present on the top tang where a lollipop rear sight was once installed. The lock and double set triggers are slightly mushy but still fully functional nonetheless. The half-length walnut stock has an old added varnish over lightly sanded wood with numerous small handling marks and bruises throughout and is fastened by a single wedge with elaborately scalloped escutcheons. There is a lightly engraved triggerguard with ornate German silver inset along the underside of the forend and folksy ?hot rod flames? stretching back from the pewter forend tip. The checkering is still sharp with very little wear evident and there is usage wear just behind the bolster. Some with-the-grain cracks are likewise present on the forend running back from the tip. The buttplate and patchbox are darkly freckled and the gun comes with a well used brass-tipped wooden ramrod held by two plain thimbles. This is a handsome Pennsylvania target rifle in very good-near fine condition. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Jacob Harder Model: Percussion Caliber Info: .38 Cal Gauge Info: .38 Cal |
