The barrel has an overall smooth plum-brown patina with some silvering along the flats and edges. The breech area is maker marked: “M.J. MAULLIN, QUEENSTOWN. WHITWORTH PATENT” (Queenstown, South Africa 1865-1881). The rear sight is not original (and although graduated, there are no numerals marking distance), added target front sight base, and two drilled and tapped holes at the right of the breech (presumably for installing a modern rear aperture sight). The lock has been reblued but still has a crisp leopard scene while the large round patchbox has a very nice maned lion motif as well. The checkered stock is in good-very good condition with nice sharp checkering on both the wrist and wedge-fastened forend although there is a small bit removed from ahead of the lockplate to accommodate the no longer present rear sight and numerous small handling marks and blemishes throughout. The trigger guard has a pineapple finial with lioness on the bow and the brass-tipped ramrod is held by two thimbles (one of which is missing the sling swivel) and lightly decorated tailpipe. The lock is tight and fully functional and despite the added “improvements”, this is nevertheless a very good-fine African-made Whitworth sporting rifle that could be brought back to “fighting trim”.
