Description:
This is a small, flashlight-shaped compass manufactured by Kelvin & Hughes Ltd. The compass and battery housing measure 7 1/2” high (not counting the adjustable sighting prism) with a bell diameter of 3 3/4”. A small angled stand is attached to the rim of the compass that has an angled prism and V-notch sight for taking bearings. The compass rose has a small amount of crackling to the center paint but is otherwise in excellent condition and the housing itself is still filled with oil (there is a small air bubble but it doesn't affect the utility of the compass). The side of the tubular housing has a sliding metal thumb-switch which activates the still working light. The compass is housed in its original gray painted wooden container (with extensive warning stencils), several large but stable splits along the grain along the main housing, and intact canvas carry strap. These compasses were used in situations where the installed aircraft instrumentation was either inconvenient or impractical were carried onboard a number of R.A.F. aircraft (Beaufighter, Stirling, Halifax, etc.) This example is in fine condition, fully serviceable (thanks to the modern battery adaptor included) and comes with the original case.
