Description:
NSN, .67 Caliber (approx. 15 Bore), 31" octagonal breech barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore that has a linear scratch along the right side. This is a graceful and attractive gun that has an excellent original twist pattern still visible along the barrel which has a wedding band transition from round to octadecagonal and again to octagonal. The breech is hallmarked "HARC-/OURT" on the top flat and has double platinum encircling bands as well as a platinum blow out plug on the nipple bolster. The "Harcourt" marked lock is nicely engraved with loose floral scroll, geometric border, and two rearing dragons. The lock itself is still tight and fully functional with an engraved dolphin hammer. The half-length walnut stock has a very old and lightly flaked added varnish over several scattered small handling marks and bruises and is fastened by a single wedge with plain octagonal escutcheons. There is an ornately engraved, lightly freckled triggerguard that has some original bright blue on the protected areas, a pineapple finial, and a dog head vignette along the exterior of the bow. The checkering is still strong and the buttstock has a few very minor handling marks and blemishes while the lightly freckled buttplate has some minor pitting along the top tang. The gun comes with the original brass-tipped wooden ramrod held by two ridged thimbles and an elegantly understated tail-pipe. There are two listings for gunmakers named Harcourt who operated in the correct time period to make this gun: Henry Harcourt (ca. 1821 - 1869 in Norwich and Sudbury); and John Harcourt (ca. 1797 - 1830 in Ipswich). This is a handsome gun in fine condition and would make an excellent addition to any collection. Antique
