#4918, Charles Lancaster, 151 New Bond St., London "Hammerless Breech Loading Gun": A Charles Lancaster 12 Bore Lever Cocking Sidelever Opening Hammerless Back Action Rounded Body Extractor Game Gun Made in 1879 with double underlugs with double bite, Top tang safety catch, It is with the original 30" Damascus barrels that were Nitro Proved in 1950 at 1 1/8 ounce with 2 1/2" chambers, Marked with the proper reproof marks, The bores at .735 .000 & .000 (Cyl. & Cyl.), 2 1/2" chambers, 1 1/8 ounce Nitro proved, Wall thickness on the right & left barrel at .029", Bushed strikers, Splinter forend with a snap forend release, Straight hand stock at 14 3/4 x 1 3/8 x 2 3/16" over a checkered butt with engraved steel heel & toe plates, Cast-off for the right hand, 7 lbs. 12 oz., Excellent wood with very nice color and contrast with deep black and brown color, 80% coverage of period engraving, This gun recently came to these shores from England, The barrel browning remains at 80%, The wood at 98%, The checkering at 99%, The wood remains very sound in every respect, The barrels are excellent inside with very light surface pitting in the thickest part of the barrels, The barrels ring with a very nice chime. This is a very nice Sidelever hammerless piece that has modern nitro proof. It will take you into the field well into the 21st century. Here is the embodiment of 1879 Lancaster Quality; very sound wood with excellent figure, great weight, modern nitro proof barrels and it comes to the hand with ease, style and grace. This gun epitomizes the hammerless gun in the early stages of its development. /////////////////////////// Charles Lancaster started in the trade in 1811 and set up shop at 151 Bond St. in 1826. He started as a barrel maker for many of the top end London makers including Purdey and marked them CL as these barrels are on this gun. He died in 1847 and his son Charles William carried on with the same interest in barrel making and was known for oval bore rifling. Their firm built quite a number of 3 & 4 barreled rifles and shotguns plus 580 four barreled pistols. They stayed as an independent firm until 1932 and were acquired by Grant & Lang at that time.
