Description:
S#NSN, .58 cal, perucssion, 40 inch barrel, good bore with strong rifling and even light erosion. This is one of 18,000 muskets built by Welch Brown & Co Norfolk Conn circa 1862-63. Lock is marked 1862 behind hammer with Eagle "US" and "Norfolk" in front. Barrel breech shows "VP" marking with no eagle head visible., left side of breech shows a "PO" . Barrel bands show a "U" on left side, bottom band has an "A" on bottom. Butplate tang show "US" marking. Metal surfaces are cleaned bright with scattered pitting and dark stainline. Hammer has been aggressively cleaned bright, hammer screw shows cold blue. Rear sight retains a dark patina. Ramrod appears original and is polished bright. Nipple is replaced with an old unissued correct piece, it is in excellent condition with 90% + blue and no pitting. Wood is very good with dings and marks in the dark oil finish, no markings show. A very good example of this rather hard to find contract musket. Antique
