Description:
This is an extremely interesting sheaf of drawings detailing SS-426 (U.S.S. Tusk), a Balao-class fleet boat commissioned in July of 1945. The drawings are bound in booklet form and measure 21 1/2” x 9” (the last plate folds out to 21 1/2” x 18”) and are comprised of eight individual plates depicting various side and plan views of both the exterior and interior of the boat as well as an oversized fold-out plate at the back showing several cross-section views along the hull at various points. The booklet is marked with the Bureau of Ships number and credited to Cramp Shipbuilding Co. of Philadelphia with the paper having acquired a mild brown age toned appearance over time with some slight edge damage where the booklet was folded and placed in an envelope for storage (the envelope is included). The “ghost” of the envelope was imprinted over the years and is still visible on the covers. U.S.S. Tusk was one of 122 units of the highly successful Balao-class built both during and just after World War II. Tusk was commissioned too late to enter hostilities and underwent GUPPY II conversion in 1948 (Greater Underwater Propulsive Power Program) which involved the removal of her surface armament, re-designing the sail, and adapting technology and techniques gleaned from captured German Type XXI U-Boats. Tusk stayed on in U.S. Navy service until 1973 when she was decommissioned and sold to the R.O.C. (Taiwan) as an ASW training vessel along with the ex-U.S.S. Cutlass (a Tench-class boat). They were renamed “Hai Pao” and “Hai Shih” respectively, and are still afloat today; the only World War II submarines still in service with any navy.
